Sladechild Foundation Charitable Trust

Nicaragua

Hogar Zacarias Guerra: Located in Managua, this orphanage takes in the cast-off children from the streets of Managua. With the return of governmental and civil stability in Nicaragua, the SladeChild Foundation was able to reach out to Nicaraguan children, many of whom are in desperate need after having suffered through the country's many misfortunes. At Hogar Zacarias Guerra, we found an excellent opportunity to help many children. Started over 60 years ago, this project has been a home for street urchins and orphans. In 1972, the buildings and groundswere destroyed by a devastating earthquake.

Hogar Zacarias Guerra - LunchtimeWhen rebuilt in 1974, its capacity to care for children was doubled. Originally designed for 120 children, the new facility now is home to 250 full-time plus another 100 day-only children. With SladeChild Foundation grant money many of the children received sport shoes for the first time in their lives for baseball, soccer and running. Sports being a central part of the children's lives, these shoes gave them a real kick! In addition, windows were purchased for several of the dormitories, framed so as to provide shade -- a real relief from the very hot, tropical weather of Nicaragua. Medical care, school books and supplies, and food are also provided through our support. The SladeChild Foundation has awarded a $3,000 annual grant to Hogar Zacaria Guerra.
