SladeChild Foundation sponsors after-school mentoring programs for children who struggle with reading and math assignments. This volunteer program offers one-on-one tutoring and mentoring for children in underserved areas in Anne Arundel County, Annapolis and Eastport. The origin of the program was neighbors’ concerns about escalating crime in nearby public housing communities and the well-being of the children living there. Children are referred by school counselors, the Housing Authority of the City of Annapolis (HACA), or caregivers. These mentoring programs are a model for how community service can lift up a neighborhood.
